A recent survey revealed that adults in the UK exercise an average of four times a week during summer, but this drops by 31% in the colder months. Almost three-quarters (72%) attribute this decline to cold temperatures, while 57% cite dark mornings and evenings as barriers to staying active.
For women, the challenge is heightened by safety concerns. Research shows that 72% of women alter their outdoor activity routines during winter due to fears about being outside in the dark. This is a significant rise compared to last year when 46% reported making similar adjustments, highlighting the growing need to address these concerns.
But staying active is crucial not only for physical health but also for mental wellbeing and workplace productivity. So, how can women and organisations prioritise activity during the winter months?
Tips for Staying Active and Safe
- Make the Most of Daylight: Incorporate movement into your lunch break to take advantage of natural light. A 20-minute walk outside can boost energy levels and improve concentration for the rest of the day.
- Exercise in Groups: Pair up with a colleague or join a local walking or fitness group. Exercising with others not only increases safety but also adds a motivational boost.
- Stay Indoors When Needed: Explore indoor options like yoga, dance, or strength training to keep moving, regardless of the weather.
- Plan Ahead: Choose well-lit routes for your outdoor activities and share your plans with someone you trust.
